1988 Apollo Everest

I got my first ‘real’ mountain bike in 1988, an Apollo Everest.

After living and studying in Brisbane for a few years it was time to leave behind everything that couldn’t be carried on a bike and ride off into the sunset, destination unknown.

The highly thought out plan meant it was time to ditch the road bike that I’d had a lot of fun mixing it with traffic on the city streets and get something a lot more robust.  A tourer wasn’t my style, but those new fangled mountain bikes were like BMX on steroids, with gears. Scotch Rubber Mastic Tape 2228

I noticed some scuffing from the chain on the inside of the Mojo HD’s carbon fibre rear triangle stays a while ago. The culprit is the limited clearance between the frame and chain when running on the smaller cogs, adding in the fact that when you’re running on the smaller cog you’re going faster and the chain is probably going to be slapping around more because of that. There was a time in the early 90’s when like many other MTB’ers I was a chronic weight weenie. I was reminded of just how bad the obsession was the other day when I came across the original box for my Selle Italia Evolution Carbon Titanium Saddle while unpacking stuff in the shed. Late 2010 RockShox started shipping an updated 12mm Rear Maxle Lite to address hub failures, most notably the Hope Pro II, when used with the tapered Maxle. The updated Rear Maxle Lite did away with the external taper, instead its consistent outer diameter providing better support for hub internals.
