The XC GUNI Bar Project

Not long after my KH36 arrived in early October 2008 I started thinking about XC handle bars for unicycles. The KH36 is so much fun to ride off road and the longer rides, higher speeds and nature of the 36″ wheel seemed ideally suited to XC style bars of some sort. The arrival of my Schlumpf MUNI Hub a couple of months later – first built into a 29 wheel, then 36 – with its awesome bike like grinding in top gear and high speed reinforced the idea that the front bumper handle wasn’t really enough to control and enjoy the GUNI off road. A good handlebar also makes road riding more comfortable too! (more…)

The KH Freeride 29er has already got me riding familiar trails harder and faster. I’m also trying out stuff on the 29er I wouldn’t have before, I guess due to the steamroller go anywhere feel the 29er has with the wider rim. Is it all in the mind? Who knows! The question is do I keep running 137mm cranks which are a great XC length or go back to 150mm and experiment with more confidence and control on difficult terrain. (more…)

With the KH 29″ Freeride ready to ride and a beautiful Autumn afternoon calling I headed out to a challenging stretch of single track in the Wombat Forest. This particular track has always felt a little beyond the combination of my skill and the standard 29’er, and is also too far from home to ride out to on the 24″ which would probably better suit sections of the trail. It seemed like an ideal place to road test the Freeride 29’er.

Wet Wombat Forest Loop

After a few days of wet and cold weather it was time to head back out into the Wombat Forest. The tracks were ultra slippery, many UPD’s and lots of laughs followed. Sitting on the 36″ starts to feel high when it’s out of control, especially sliding out from under you on slippery tracks. (more…)

Lake Wendouree, Ballarat

I had a few jobs to do in Ballarat (a regional ‘city’ in country Victoria) including dropping off the plans for the latest XC GUNI Bar prototype (should be ready late next week!) and took the 36 GUNI along just in case I had some spare time for a ride. As it turned out I had just enough time for a quick 15 minute cruise around Lake Wendouree, which for the last few years has been a lake in name only due to the ongoing drought conditions. The lake is bone dry and has even caught on fire over the last couple of summers! (more…)
