Return of the KH36

I’ve been enjoying getting back into the KH36 lately.  It’s easy to forget how efficient the big old 36’er fly wheel is and how fast and smooth it rolls through terrain compared to smaller wheels. Uphill or on the flat, trail it slightly and it rolls auto-magically. All up, it’s a load of fun to ride off road. I knew that already, but I guess I’d become too obsessed with the 24 GUni and needed reminding 😛 (more…)

Campbells Creek Bike Track

Had a fun ride with Indi along the Campbells Creek Bike Track. Most of the track is in good condition even though it had been flooded, it’s mainly sections around the bridges that are washed away and need repair. Perfect timing too, arriving at the old trestle bridge just as the steam train passed over. (more…)

Didj the Uni Dog

Had fun down at the local reserve today with Didj the uni dog. Didj is a 6 month old kelpie cross with LOTS of energy. We’ve already been out on many walks, uni rides and MTB rides but today was the first day on the 36’er which Didj seemed to get excited about – maybe it’s the extra height, dunno! Didj runs alongside the 29’er no problem but went a little crazy beside the 36’er. (more…)

Spring Field

Hail Uni

It was sunny and warm today when I left home on the 36’er. Within an hour dark grey/green clouds built up, then the wind, then hail, then sleet and rain… OUCH! In less than 30 minutes the temperature dropped a bunch making for a wet and cold remainder of the ride. Lesson: Carry a better rain shell during Spring. (more…)

36er Gone Tubeless

At ~4kg the 36’er wheel is one big old flywheel. Feels great when it’s spinning, but it’s the sort of thing that encourages you to mess around usually looking for ways to loose weight towards the outside of the wheel as well as improving ride. (more…)
