It was sunny and warm today when I left home on the 36’er. Within an hour dark grey/green clouds built up, then the wind, then hail, then sleet and rain… OUCH! In less than 30 minutes the temperature dropped a bunch making for a wet and cold remainder of the ride. Lesson: Carry a better rain shell during Spring.

I headed up the dirt road through the forest connecting Glenlyon to Little Hampton. Though a lot of my favorite loops cross over it I hadn’t ridden the road itself for a long time. Once out the door at home it’s almost all uphill for ~8km with a few short flats and dips that come in handy for recovery – a good 36’er ‘training’ ride.

I turned off the Little Hampton road at Trailer Track as I’d never ridden the top half of the latter. Good fun, lots of downhill, and the tubeless 36’er tire felt great!

Spring is a great time for riding in the Wombat Forest – not too hot, water around, lots of stuff in flower and bonus storms that pass over every now and then.

The hail wasn’t huge but dang it got cold afterwards.

The trails got kinda wet too!

Can’t say I missed the 36’er GUni today. I’m back to running 137mm cranks and really do like how they feel on a 36’er for off road XC riding. I am looking forward though to getting my Schlumpf hub back, converting my 24 to a GUni and seeing what that is like.
