A recent thread on the unicyclist.com forums regarding how best to lubricate Schlumpf hubs made me think that perhaps using a mixture of bacon grease and bicycle grease isn’t a great idea. Who would’ve guessed huh? 😉 (more…)
A 24″ GUni is a cool idea in theory – in 1:1.5 gear it becomes a virtual 36″ wheel. A 24″ and a 36″ uni in one small tough package, sounds great. (more…)

With my geared hub out of a wheel and heading back to Switzerland I’ve been thinking more about what GUni to make next. The 36’er GUni was great fun for XC off road riding — a super speed machine with two genuinely useful gears — but TBH I ended up feeling I wasn’t making the most of the hub, and given I don’t have any interest in road riding just to make better use of the hub chances are it won’t be going back into a 36’er. Out on an afternoon forest ride in early April the familiar clicking sound as I went to change gears was absent, my ankle and shoe couldn’t seem to find the shifter button. No wonder – the button was MIA. How useful is a GUNI 36’er on the trail without those little shifter buttons? Not very… ARGH! (more…)
Unfortunately nothing I do seems to stop my Schlumpf hub from eating Moment cranks. By that I mean eventually a crank (on either side) will progressively move close to the frame to the point of almost touching it – at which time I replace the cranks rather than damage either myself, the frame or the hub. I am now onto my third pair of cranks, which is a concern as Moment cranks aren’t cheap. (more…)
