I felt ok after the monthly MUni ride so with a break in the wet weather and the flu seemingly done and dusted it was time to start exploring the network of MTB singletrack trails at Woodend, something I’ve been meaning to do for ages. The singletrack might also be ideal for upcoming MUni group rides.
The MTB crew at Woodend have created ~50km of singletrack through the Wombat Forest which has become a popular haunt for several hundred mountain bikers each weekend, but being mid week mid winter I didn’t see too many MTB’ers today – not such a bad thing when you’re riding singletrack on a a uni.
Due to the recent wild weather and MTB use the singletrack was chopped up, greasy and slippery, but lots of fun – conditions that really challenge you to spin smoothly. I was mindful of not over doing it and rode only a portion of the singletrack but plan to return and ride the entire trail network. One section today included a bunch of large log jumps/obstacles across the trail that could be taken at speed on the 29’er, nice! Should make for some great video and photos in the future.
The KH29’er with the 47mm reeride Rim and WTB Stout 2.3 was a perfect match for the trail, terrain and wet conditions. In drier conditions I’d guess the KH36 with 150mm cranks would also be a hoot on these trails.
Yeah, nothing like a shot of MUni followed up by vanilla slice at the Woodend Bakery to get over the Winter flu! 🙂
