It’s been a few years since I’ve ridden a unicycle to say the least!
From an obsession to a memory, I pretty much thought my one-wheeled days were over. A friend generously lent me his old 36er years ago but it had just sat there with a flat tire. Then one day the store where I worked got sold, and suddenly I had time on my hands.
Just one ride on the 36er couldn’t do any harm. But how do you even mount one? Standing behind the big wheel after all these years I had no idea. What was once automatic and easy, now seemed impossible – and more than just a little scary.
Anyhow. I survived and loved it. Body memory slowly returned, and after a few days it felt like there was more time to be spent on one wheel. Soon followed the obligatory visit to unicycle.com Australia. A KH 27.5 would be my main steed, supplemented by a 19″ trails uni ‘for my partner’ to learn to unicycle – and I might use from time to time to fast-track my skills. 🙂
Perhaps I needed some kind of riding goal, though I’ve never been one for that kind of thing. Never the less, so other people could understand why ~60 years old seems like a good time to get back into mountain unicycling I came up with one: To ride from our home in the foothills of kunanyi/Mt Wellington into the city center, cherry picking my way down along the many MTB trails.
So that’s the story as they say.
And as always, special thanks to Guy and the team at municycle.com.au
