Winter 2016 is turning out to be a wet and cold one so far that’s for sure! Inevitably thoughts turn to warmer, sunnier days… like last Summer, and the Summer ahead.

Here’s some MTB highlights from last Summer that are keeping me toasty and warm while hibernating…

The Fainters Track
I reckon this has to be one of the best back country MTB day rides in Australia. Beginning in the mountains at Falls Creek, ending in the Kiewa Valley at Mt Beauty, and taking in some awesome scenery and a variety of fun trails along the way. It’s a cracker 40+km adventure.

Lake Mountain Super G
With so little information or buzz about this trail online, the Lake Mountain Super G was hands down the surprise of the Summer. It’s a super fun 12km descending trail from the summit of Lake Mountain down to the ticket box. I guess the best way to describe it is as a modern day interpretation of old school trail. Lots of fun, not too refined, and great views! Definitely one to put on the list for next Summer.

Falls Creek vs Mt Buller: Battle of the Mountain Resorts
I had a shitload of fun riding at both Mt Buller and Falls Creek over the Summer. Mt Buller offers a bunch of great shuttle options. The short and sharp DH trails within the resort mean you can punch out a heap of runs in a day. Looking for longer shuttle runs? The Epic, River Trail and Klingsporn have got it covered.

Where Buller feels more like a MTB Park, Falls Creek feels more back country. The runs within the resort at Falls are longer than those at Buller, and combined with the nature of the terrain make you work harder for your fun. The more you ride the trails at Falls, the more rewards! The new Flowtown trail down to Howmans Gap will be a massive boost to trail network at Falls next Summer.

Buxton MTB Park
The highlight of Buxton is without doubt the flow jump trail… oh and the home made pies available at the local general store! There aren’t many flow trails in Australia that include a bunch of table tops and gap jumps. It’s reason enough to visit Buxton, plus there’s a bunch of old school DH trails like Granton tucked away in the nearby hills.

Other cool places
That’s not too mention the many other cool places to ride I plan to revisit this coming Summer, especially Big Hill MTB Park at Mt Beauty and Mystic MTB Park at Bright.

And best of all, next Summer is going to kick off with a massive MTB party in the mountains Falls Creek. I’ll see ya there!
