Don’t need to ride many Central Victorian trails before you come across super tight corners, switchbacks or u turns, sometimes lots of them, strung together one after another. Whatever you call them, whether climbing or descending they can be tricky little suckers to negotiate. All of the sudden the wheelbase of your MTB starts to feel like a semi trailer.

The Baco trails feature a lot of U turns, lots of opportunity to get better at them. My favorite at the moment is a tight u turn located at the bottom of a loose rocky descent. You slow up just enough to make it around the 180 turn, then are immediately faced with an even rockier, loose steep climb back up the hill. Cool when you get it done smoothly, funny when you don’t.

One thing I’ve noticed along the way is that whenever you see a ‘no motorbikes’ sign on a trail it’s often a heads up that a switchback or several are nearby. I guess the ultra tight, slow, technical trails are one way of encouraging motocross riders to pillage elsewhere. Not a bad move, there’s plenty to go around.
