Surrounded by World Heritage wilderness, Pumphouse Point seemingly floats on the surface of Lake St Clair, the deepest lake in the South Hemisphere. A 10 year labor of love has seen the abandoned hydro pumping station transformed into a luxury Tassie getaway. Sounds awesome right? It is!

Last Summer Von and I were fortunate to win a sizeable travel voucher from Tourism Tasmania as a part of their #tassiestyle social media campaign. We made our Tassie wishlist and checked it twice. Staying at Pumphouse Point sat there in the number one spot. There’s just something magical about it – the historic building, the glacial lake, the snow capped mountains and wilderness, the romance. You want to experience it.

Our time to stay at Pumphouse Point finally arrived this week, and we weren’t disappointed. Our room on the top floor was sublime. Peaceful and cosy with views over the lake to the surrounding mountains. The staff were warm and friendly from the first greeting to the last. Shared meal times were a treat. Pete the local platypus even stopped in for a visit!

But the true stars of the show were the lake and the pumphouse itself. Regardless of conditions, foggy or clear, day or star filled nights, your eyes are drawn to where the 1930’s art deco-esque building meets the water. It’s magnetic and ever changing.

During our stay at the Pumphouse we tried pretty much everything we could fit in! Delicious freshly baked bread delivered to your door as needed, deep hot baths, rowing out on the lake, bike riding, catching the ferry to Echo Point, hiking back through magical Myrtle Forest, and more! You’re left with a feeling of wanting to stay longer.

All up Pumphouse Point delivers a quintessential Tasmanian experience. Understated, welcoming luxury in a truly unique, repurposed wilderness setting. Yes it is on the expensive side of things, but it is well and truly worth it!
