I have been SERIOUSLY lazy with the drivetrain on the Mojo HD over the last few months, conducting my own experiment with BikInventions Squirt Wax Based Lube. The theory is you just keep lubing your chain with Squirt and never have to clean your drivetrain again, ever! So that’s what I’ve been doing.

The idea does sound very cool — I’d much rather be out riding or goofing off generally vs cleaning a drivetrain — and you know what, Squirt delivers, well almost. The drivetrain continues to run along smoothly but what about gunk?

After more than 3 months of not doing ANY cleaning at all there is hardly any gunk at all on the cassette, a little more gunk on the chain but still not very much at all. Where gunk has built up is on the sides of rear rear derailleur pulleys, but mostly on the MRP Mini—G2’s lower guide pulley. It seems to be gunk collection central.

I think the build up on the lower pulley is most likely due to me either applying too much Squirt, or applying it too often (or both). I’ve been using a large workshop sized bottle of Squirt and I’ve noticed I tend to use more because of that. Some other guys using Squirt give the drivetrain a quick going over with a wire brush every now and then and that looks to be a good idea.

So I cleaned out the gunk, which is sort of like black oily boogers, and gave the drivetrain a wipe down and will try the wire brush technique, but after 3—4 months of using Squirt I’m pretty much sold. There’s no reason to stop using it.
